I have a Windows VPN that is only used for direct connection to a remote server. It is periodically unavailable, and I only make the connection when I need to access the server. One of my programs, Mailbird, is using the VPN as its internet connection somehow, so I have to connect to the VPN before it will send and receive. Other programs, such as the Edge browser, don't have this problem.

I'd like Mailbird to use the system's internet connection instead. Can I do this?

What VPN system and how is it configured? What you're talking about is probably called "split tunnel" and is defined and controlled by the people controlling the VPN. Is this perhaps your employer's VPN? Is this your own computer, or is it also owned by the people who control the VPN? Commented May 28 at 22:13
  • If a company VPN and split tunnel, you need to find out when and how it starts

  • If Mailbird is connecting to a service on this remote server then it’s very likely only the VPN can connect to this remote server. Is Mailbird connecting to this same remote server?

  • Yes, it's work-related. The VPN can only connect to the company server. Mailbird is using only the internet connection of the VPN, nothing else involving the server. Am checking with the tech that set it up.

  • It took a while for IT to get back to me. The VPN is configured to merely connect to the target server and does not allow internet traffic. So, next I'll have to uninstall Mailbird, ensure the VPN is disconnected, and reinstall and then see.
