I have a Proxmox Cluster set up with four nodes and One qDevice set up. I just got the qDevice working last night, but since this evening I'm seeing something I can't really understand. The passwords on my nodes are changing, but they are changing only when I change a different node's password. I am pretty sure this is not an intrusion. Can never be too sure, but it really does not look like that's what is happening here.

Context: Last night while setting up the qDevice, I finally had the node finished in the way I wanted it and so I randomized all the passwords amongst the nodes (something I meant to do long ago, but didn't because of convenience). The last two nodes were the ones who needed the password reset and randomized, so I reset them and changed them to a 20 character string of numbers and letters (no symbols, I've had issues with this in the past). When I changed those passwords everything seemed fine, and I was able to get into the main controller this morning. I shut all the nodes down this afternoon because of a storm, and then restarted the main controller node and the qDevice a few hours later without turning on the rest of the nodes. Tonight I was setting up a new laptop, and I went to set up an ssh session to the controller only to find out the master password was not working. The passwords of the last two nodes did not change, and I logged into them and changed all of the passwords of every device (except the qDevice, which I unfortunately now cannot get into). But after I did this now the first two nodes I can log into, but the last four again are saying access denied like my password is incorrect.

If this was an intrusion, I would expect that all the passwords would be changed/disabled. Yet, here we are. So can anyone fathom what is happening here?

  • Few months later - I did not find the cause of this issue, but it has not happened since. I can only guess what happened since as far as I can tell, it self-healed. I THINK it is possible that my passwords were either too long, or using characters that were not supported by Proxmox. I use a password manager so all my passwords are randomly generated and tend to be on the longer side, so... It's possible. It's also possible I was having a difficult time with copy-paste. Its possible that I was just getting all my passwords mixed up - I have no idea. Feel free to comment if you have this issue.
